In this space, I host The Silence on Sundays. I sit in Quiet Sessions with clients one to one, on other days. And in the spaces in between, late in the evenings, early in the mornings, it becomes my tiny ambient studio, and here, I make meditative ambient, and drone music.
Even my iPhone is a part of this tiny studio, a bed for instruments. It goes everywhere with me, along with a pair of in ear monitors, and another pair that have binaural microphones on them.
There is also a tiny OP-Z sequencer/synth — a special birthday gift. And a little Orba, and a couple of other midi controllers, tucked away in a small white drawer unit at the end of my desk, that houses all that is a part of my work.
I need little for this studio, although I have a wishlist, of items that will enable me to begin to share my ambient music live with those who come to sit with me. But I don’t intend or wish for it to grow beyond that. The intentionally minimal setup is a blessing as a creator. Less is more in this case. This is also the case with the creating of my music. Less is more. Notes are no more important than silence.
There is also a little backpack, that I take out with me, about the size that young primary school kids might carry. In this, I put a few portable items when heading out to the coast, to walk, or sit a while. Music springs anywhere. I have an audio recorder in it that I can capture field recordings and samples of interesting sounds, and when more mobile, without my backpack, a mic that plugs into my phone, to capture sounds and samples in high quality audio.
This is where I make the music I share in The Silence, on days such as today, when I shared my recording, Flight, which I played during the 15 minutes of ambient music that opens each session, before the silent sitting begins for 25 minutes.
